Many Americans live busy lives. It is easy to forget the importance of protecting your credit. In a few short seconds, credit card thieves can steal your credit card information, and you are left to pick up the pieces.

Online credit card transactions worry some people. In reality making purchases online is very safe. A lot of money has been invested in making online purchases safe. It is in everyone’s best interest from you, to the bank, and to the online retailer. Here are some tips to avoid being a victim of credit card thieves.

Know the Online Company You are Purchasing From

Be careful that you are purchasing items from a legitimate online retailer. Many online companies display a security certificate that you can click on. If you don’t see a security certificate, try looking on the Internet. Look to see if you can find any information for that company. Search for things like how long they have been in business and whether there have been any complaints. Usually, you will easily be able to find this information. The company could be brand new, and you are one of its first customers. In this particular case, you can choose whether to take the risk. They are either a new legitimate company nobody has ever heard of, or they are a fly by night scam operation.

Have You Ever Heard of Phishing?

Phishing is where you are made to believe that you have received a legitimate email from a known company or bank that you trust. In this type of email, you are asked to do one of two things.

The first scam leads you to believe that you need to verify your account by sending your information through an email; this is usually done with making you think you received an email from your bank.

The second scam will get you believe you have received a legitimate email from a well-known company such as Amazon. You are given a special offer that you can purchase through the email by clicking a link. You are not sent to the Amazon site, but to the scammer’s site. Look at the address bar in your browser if you wonder if this is happening to you. If the address is something other than Amazon.com you don’t want to send your credit card information. It is very easy to replicate the look of any site. This is why many people have fallen prey to this scam.
